Restoration - past, present, future

One of the most essential functions of Historic Ships in Baltimore is the ongoing maintenance and restoration of USS Constellation, USCGC Taney, USS Torsk, Lightship Chesapeake and the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse.  The Museum’s dedicated Maintenance & Restoration staff and corp. of volunteers work to ensure that these national treasures survive for future generations.

On this page you can find information about current projects being underway at Historic Ships in Baltimore, as well as information on past restorations.

Current Restoration

USS Constellation Topside Repair

When you visit USS Constellation, you will notice a lot of activity on the side of  the ship.  The Museums staff is working hard to remove damage caused by the intrusion of fresh water into materials that were added to the ship during her last large restoration in the 1990's.  This project is made possible by the support of the National Park Service's Save America's Treasure program.

USS Torsk Deck Repair

Did you know that submarines had wooden decks?  Visit the USS Torsk and see the wooden deck atop the sub that is currently being replaced with the assistance of the Torsk Volunteer Association.

USS Constellation Ships Boats

During her active service USS Constellation had a complement of approximately 8 ship's boats that the crew would use to move from Constellation to the shore or other ships.  While Constellations original ship's boats have been lost, accurate replicas are currently being constructed by the Museum's Senior Shipwright Bruce MacKenzie.  (photos coming soon)
